The Degenerate Digest v.156

I completely forgot to mention during last week’s column that it would be the last Week 0 of our lives. The NCAA officially announced next season, Week 0 will simply become Week 1. Which in the grand scheme of things makes a lot of sense. Why the hell is the start of the season Week 0. But I would be remiss to not be a bit somber about this overall logical decision. It’s not like the modern world of college football makes any sense to begin with. We just had an entire conference sue the shit out of one of it’s flagship programs. If you don’t know what I’m referencing, the SEC sued (unsuccessfully) LSU. Quit living under a rock. Anyway, in the world of college football chaos, Week 0 - as silly as it was, seemed to track for the universal disorder.

Speaking of disorder, Week 1 is once again lacking. Another win for the removal for Week 0 I guess. Looking at the board, I was confused. Puzzled. Perplexed. I couldn’t tell if I should continue pointing the ever sturdy finger at the idiocracy that is the NCAA for not having a smashing opening weekend with heavy hitter after heavy hitter, or if there was something bigger at play. Yes, I’m certain you know what I am speaking of. It was the rain.

Could we have had more rain this week? I mean, what’s up with that? I don’t mean to be Water Cooler Joe over here starting the first official weekend slate talking about the weather, but how could I not? Literally impossible to not mention the rain this week. Way too much rain not to be included. Did I mention the rain yet? Of course I did, how could I not? It watered down the entire Week 1 board! There was just so much rain. So let's not be too hard on the NCAA. They're just confused because when they made this schedule, they didn't realize it would look so diluted due to all this rain. No no, don't blame the schedule makers for getting rid of Week 0, making it Week 1, and then making Week 1 just as limited matchup-wise as Week 0 was. That was the rain. Blame it on the rain.

Ball State @ (1) Ohio State: Ohio State -50.5, Ball State Team Total O2.5

Look at this pick. My god is that a pick. Let’s all take a moment to admire this pick.

Seriously, you just knew that was going to happen. You’re giving me 4 quarters for Ball State to get one field goal? Electric factory. Speaking of electric factory, Ball State’s QB is 5’10”, 250lbs. We just need this dude, Keldric Luster, to run QB Draw conservatively 76 times and this pick will feed generations.

But yeah, Ohio State -50.5.

Final Score: Ohio State 58, Ball State 6

Duquesne @ Air Force: Air Force -28.5

I think I will be making it a tradition to take one of our armed forces in Week 1. It may already be a tradition, I forget. But just in case it isn’t, I’m making it one now. Only 3% of the bets are on Air Force. However, 48% of the money is on Air Force. That must be the President. Or Pelosi. Either way, it seems pretty freakin sharp to me. And since I too am sharp (see last week’s blog if you’re not so sure about me being sharp), this is the side for me.

Final Score: Air Force 42, Duquesne 10

Boise State @ (2) Oregon: Oregon 1H -14.5, Oregon -24.5

I know I rag on Oregon a lot, but they really are going to contend this year. At least they very much should. I would look at this team not making it to the natty, a failure. At home opening up against a Boise State squad that has a good bit of transition going on, including an upgrade to the blue turf.

Add to that the amount of continuity for Oregon both on the side lines and on the field, I feel like all of Eugenie would turn into The End of Oak Street if they didn’t start the year off blowing the doors off the Broncos.

If these bets don’t hit, let the ragging commence.

Final Score: Oregon 45, Boise State 14

Boston College @ Cincinnati: Boston College +7.5

Everything I have heard coming into this season is that BC might be one of the worst teams in the country. Well, can you tell me exactly how the supposed worst team in the country opened as a 9.5 point underdog, and with 63% of the bets on Cincinnati, their line has dropped to 7.5? Seems oddly similar to the Georgia Tech/Colorado line funk I witnessed on Thursday night. Take the points with the potential worst team in the country.

Final Score: Cincinnati 27, Boston College 21

Clemson @ (11) LSU: Under 50.5

Thick Sack down on the bayou. I already mentioned the whole SEC vs. LSU lawsuit from this week, not that there aren’t a billion other narratives surrounding this program. They will be the talk of the town for the months to come I’m sure. Clemson, however, not so much. Maybe in some ACC circles, if they even compete in the ACC this year. But I really think Dabo is past his prime, and thus so is this program until they decide to part ways with one another. Mutually, or not. With that said, I think both sides of the ball here are going to need some time to get goin’. LSU looks to open with clock control, establish the run game, then let loose if it’s still close after halftime. Who knows what Clemson will do offensively, but I at least trust their defensive front to limit the explosiveness of the Tigers rushing attack. This will be more of a chess match than it probably should be.

Final Score: LSU 24, Clemson 23
